Two people were taken to the hospital after a collision occurred in Herndon following a police chase, police said.

At about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, a Herndon patrol officer tried to stop a sport-utility vehicle for speeding. The SUV then pulled into a shopping-center parking lot, turned onto Elden Street and accelerated. The officer with his lights and sirens activated, pursued the SUV toward Herndon Parkway and Dranesville Road, Herndon police said.

The patrol supervisor terminated the pursuit before the officer approached Herndon High School, but the SUV continued at a high rate of speed. It ran a red light at the intersection of Dranesville Road and Wiehle Avenue, striking another vehicle, police said. The SUV then rolled several times before it came to a rest.

The driver and passenger in the SUV were taken to a hospital, but police did not know what their injuries were. No one else was injured during the collision.
