New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg argued that the National Rifle Association (NRA) is weak as he called for lawmakers to pass gun control legislation opposed by the largest pro-gun rights group in the country.

“There are some legislators who think . . . that their careers would be limited if they go against the NRA,” Bloomberg said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe today. “I don’t happen to think that’s true.”

Bloomberg then did a post-election victory dance on the. “The NRA was notoriously unsuccessful in the last election term,” he continued. “They set one major priority, that was to defeat Barack Obama, and I think in a couple of weeks you’re going to see an inauguration — Barack Obama’s getting inaugurated again — shows you the power of the NRA. I created a little PAC and we went against four NRA members and in three cases, I think, the opponent won. So, you can beat the NRA.”

Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which Bloomberg co-chairs, released an ad featuring Roxanna Green — whose young daughter, Christina Taylor-Green, was murdered in the Tucson shooting two years ago.

“I have one question for our political leaders,” Green asks in the ad. “When will you find the courage to stand up to the gun lobby? Whose child has to die next?”

Connecticut, where the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting recently took place, already has a state assault weapons ban to go with some of the toughest gun control laws in the country.
