Maryland State Del. Don Dwyer, who had been drinking before a boating accident in August, said Tuesday that he has sought treatment for an alcohol problem.

Dwyer, who represents Anne Arundel County, faces several charges in connection with the crash, including operating a vessel while under the influence of alcohol. The 54-year-old legislator had a blood-alcohol content that was three times the legal limit when his boat and another boat collided on the Magothy River near Pasadena, police said.

In a message on his Facebook page, Dwyer said that he turned to alcohol to cope with personal and professional challenges in the past year. But he said that he "voluntarily entered and completed an alcohol intervention program" and is committed to attending counseling and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

"It is extremely difficult to lay bare a deeply personal issue in such a public way," Dwyer said. "However, I believe it is the right thing to do, as I feel answerable to the folks who chose me to represent them in the Legislature."

The delegate declined to comment on the crash Tuesday due to the pending court case.
