INAUGURAL DANCE PREP

Attending one of the many inaugural balls or parties means lots and lots of dancing. So if you have tickets to one of the fetes and it's been a while since your two left feet got on the dance floor, we recommend a few things: Wear sturdy shoes, arm yourself with a patient partner and stop by Tropicalia (2001 14th St. NW) before making your way to the ball. Warm up your feet at Maracuyeah's Latin-infused dance party with other fellow inauguration attendees. DJ Maria Fernanda Escobar and her musical partner, DJ Rat, also known as Kristy Chavez-Fernandez, have planned the perfect dance party showcasing the rhythms of Mexico, Columbia, El Salvador, Peru and more. There are plenty of inauguration parties this weekend, but you'll want to be at this one.

The party kicks off at 10 p.m., and the best part is it's free.

THIEVERY AFTERPARTY

The District's very own DJ duo Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, of Thievery Corporation, will be spinning beats at the 9:30 Club on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but unless you planned weeks ago, you won't be attending the sold-out trio of shows. Instead, we've got our sights set on the afterparty a few doors down at the Brixton (901 U St. NW), with Thievery Corporation's opening band, The Archives, playing into the wee hours. The band was created by Eric Hilton himself, and it performs regularly at U Street's Patty Boom Boom, a Jamaican-influenced dance hall. Charismatic lead singer Ras Puma will fill the restaurant with the sounds of reggae and Latin-flavored jazz starting at 10 p.m. The event is free, and you don't need to scramble to find a ticket for this one.
