ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A Maryland state lawmaker has been named chairman of the Tri-State Chesapeake Bay Commission.

Democratic Delegate Maggie McIntosh will oversee the policy and legislative efforts of the 21-member commission for 2013. The commission includes lawmakers from Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia as well as natural resource officials and private citizens. Her appointment was announced Friday.

McIntosh says a top priority will be finding a solution to the massive sediment buildup behind the Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River in northeastern Maryland. She says the sediment "poses a serious threat to the Chesapeake and its living resources." The dam is scheduled to be relicensed in 2014.

McIntosh says the commission is asking federal authorities for help in addressing the problem.
