President Obama would sign a bill that raised the debt ceiling in exchange for passing a budget, according to a top White House adviser, despite his previous refusal to negotiate over the debt ceiling.

“You’re not going to veto a three-month extension, are you?” Fox News’ Chris Wallace asked White House senior adviser David Plouffe.

“No, we think that this was progress,” Plouffe replied.

The White House imprimatur could increase pressure on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to pass the bill, which would raise the debt ceiling for three months but require lawmakers to pass a budget by the end of that time or have their pay withheld. Reid said he would “be happy to consider” the legislation, but House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., attacked Republicans for proposing the idea.

“This is a gimmick unworthy of the challenges we face and the national debate we should be having,” Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said, per the Las Vegas Review Journal. “The message from the American people is clear: no games, no default.”
