Congressman Bruce L. Braley D-Iowa is not happy after hearing reports that the Army has replaced hot breakfasts for troops in Afghanistan with MREs (Meals, Ready to Eat).

“These men and women put their lives on the line every day to protect the very freedoms we cherish. The exhaustive mental and physical labor that is required by soldiers to fight in harsh and unforgiving conditions is tremendous,” wrote Braley to Secretary of the Army John McHugh. “We shouldn’t deny our troops something as fundamental as a proper meal.”

According to the Defense Department, hot breakfasts have been discontinued in some areas of Afghanistan to “streamline logistics,” but that MRE’s and cold cereal were still available if the troops wanted it.

“We want to assure you that all soldiers are receiving four meals per day (if they want all four),” the statement from the Defense Department read.

Braley, however, wants hot breakfasts to return.

“I urge you to reverse this policy and swiftly reintroduce breakfast for our men and women serving in uniform abroad,” Braley writes. “Thank you for your time and consideration regarding this matter and I look forward to your response.”
