A proposed requirement for the District's taxicabs to install credit card machines by the end of March is likely to be delayed after the D.C. Taxicab Commission couldn't muster enough members Thursday to vote on the matter.
The commission said it had postponed a vote on the proposed rule and that the delay would "necessitate DCTC to revise the planned March 30, 2013 deadline for implementation."
Just last week, the commission said it would require drivers to install the credit card readers in taxis after a planned "smart meter" program stalled amid a contracting dispute.
"The playing field has changed," Taxi Commission Chairman Ron Linton said recently. "The technology has exceeded regulatory catch-up. There's a better way to do it, and we're moving on to a better way."
