Robert Griffin III transformed the Redskins from an NFC East doormat into division champions. He helped introduce a unique brand of offensive football that provided headaches for defenses and exhilaration for fans.
And, Saturday night, he was rewarded for all that he did. Griffin was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year, the first time a Redskins player won the award since — Griffin threw for 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns and ran for 815 yards and seven scores. He finished with a passer rating of 102.4.
Griffin earned 29 votes from 50 media members who cover the league on a regular basis. Indianapolis quarterback Andrew Luck was second with 11 votes; Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson was third with 10 votes.
Griffin made his first appearance since undergoing surgery on his right knee last month in Florida. He has spent the time rehabbing in Florida and, by all accounts, is doing well. He and Redskins head athletic trainer Larry Hess drove to New Orleans from Pensacola, Fla., for this event.
Griffin told reporters in New Orleans after winning, “It’s truly a blessing to be up there — to be able to stand, first and foremost.”
He also told reporters that he’ll go back and forth between Ashburn and Pensacola, Fla., during the rehab process. Griffin needed his ACL reconstructed and his LCL and MCL repaired. Estimates for his return range from six to eight months and Griffin told reporters that “my goal is Week 1. That’s all I’m really worried about.”
Griffin also told reporters that, “you will see a different version of me. You won’t see the same Robert Griffin. You’ll see a better Robert Griffin.”
