2 people dead in vacant apartment fire in Southeast D.C.

Two people were found dead at a fire at a vacant apartment building in Southeast Washington.

D.C. firefighters got a call about 10 a.m. Tuesday for a fire at 1704 R Street SE, and found the two-story apartment on fire.

While putting out the blaze, three firefighters suffered minor injuries, and were taken to a hospital. Fire officials brought the fire under control about 11 a.m..

D.C. fire department spokesman Oscar Mendez confirmed the death of two civilians, but did not know the circumstances under which they were found or what they were doing at the abandoned apartment.

The victims have not been identified.

Police and fire officials continued to investigate the cause of the fire and the deaths of the two people.
