We are nearing the quarter point of the season already and the Caps need a victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs, who enter fresh off a loss Monday night in Raleigh and are playing their backup goalie, Ben Scrivens. This is a game you need to win – even if it won’t be easy.

“Yeah. And you know, we played Toronto [last Thursday], we came back and we beat Philly [on Friday],” Washington coach Adam Oates said. “They were waiting for us. Every team goes through it. You got to be pros. And guys are in such great shape now. It’s not quite the same as it used to be. But in this year it’s a little different because of the schedule.”

Michal Neuvirth gets the start in goal for the Caps after sitting out the last two games. Jason Chimera moves up to the second line, where Oates likes his speed paired with center Nicklas Backstrom and right wing Troy Brouwer. The hope is Chimera can use that speed on the forecheck to force turnovers. We’ll see how long it lasts. The scratches are defensemen John Erskine (suspended) and Roman Hamrlik and forward Mathieu Perreault.

“We need to stay positive. You can’t just put your head down and be mad or sad about it,” Backstrom said. “We’ve got to deal with it. We’re in this position and we’ve got to deal with it, we’ve got to work through it and stick together and work together.”
