Bradley Beal hopes to play tonight against the Brooklyn Nets, and positive return would leave little doubt that he’ll participate in the Rising Stars Challenge next Friday in Houston as part of NBA All-Star Weekend.
He was picked No. 8 overall for Team Chuck in the player draft for the game held Thursday evening on TNT.
Portland point guard Damian Lillard was picked first overall by Team Shaq while Team Chuck picked Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Hornets.
TEAM SHAQ’s full roster: Lillard, Kyrie Irving (Cleveland), Andre Drummond (Detroit), Klay Thompson and Harrison Barnes (Golden State), Chandler Parsons (Houston), Dion Waiters (Cleveland), Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Charlotte), Tyler Zeller (Cleveland), and Kemba Walker (Charlotte).
TEAM CHUCK: Davis, Beal, Ricky Rubio (Minnesota), Isaiah Thomas (Sacramento), Kenneth Faried (Denver), Kawhi Leonard (San Antonio), Tristan Thompson (Cleveland), Nikola Vucevic (Orlando), Brandon Knight (Detroit), and Alexey Shved (Minnesota).
*Beal isn’t the only member of the Wizards headed to Houston. The Wizards don’t allow assistant coach Sam Cassell to talk to the media, but he’s been given leave during the All-Star break to represent the Western Conference in the Shooting Stars contest as part of All-Star Saturday Night.
Cassell, who played three of his 15 NBA seasons in Houston and won back-to-back titles with the Rockets in 1994 and 1995, will join Robert Horry, his former Rockets teammates, with current Rockets guard James Harden, Oklahoma City guard Russell Westbrook, Maya Moore of the Minnesota Lynx and the Seattle Storm’s Tina Thompson.
The Eastern Conference team includes Miami forward Chris Bosh, Brooklyn center Brook Lopez, Swin Cash of the Chicago Sky, Tamika Catchings of the Indiana Fever, former Washington Bullet Muggsy Bogues and Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins.
The Sears Shooting Stars contest takes place over six numbered shooting locations of increasing difficulty, with each team attempting to make all shots in numeric order in the fastest time. Each team will select a specific player rotation to follow throughout the competition. Each shot must be made before the next player begins shooting in succession. Teams have up to two minutes to complete the entire shooting course.
*Martell Webster is tied for seventh in the NBA in 3-point shooting percentage (.433), but he’ll miss out on the 3-point shooting contest on Saturday night. The participants: Paul George (Indiana), Kyrie Irving (Cleveland), Ryan Anderson (New Orleans), Matt Bonner (San Antonio), Stephen Curry (Golden State) and Steve Novak (New York).
*The Slam Dunk contest lineup starts with 2012 champion Jeremy Evans (Utah) and also includes Eric Bledsoe (Los Angeles Clippers), Kenneth Faried (Denver), 2007 champion Gerald Green (Indiana), Terrence Ross (Toronto) and James White (New York).
*Tony Parker (San Antonio) will defend his Skills Challenge title against Jrue Holiday (Philadelphia), Brandon Knight (Detroit), Damian Lillard (Portland), Jeremy Lin (Houston) and Jeff Teague (Atlanta).
