Two University of Maryland students are dead and a third was injured in a murder-suicide near the College Park school, police said.

Shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday, police went to the 8700 block of 36th Avenue and found three men who had been shot.

According to a preliminary investigation, one of the students set a fire in the basement of his home. Two roommates went downstairs to see what had happened, and the three students then went outside.

The man who started the fire shot one of his roommates, and then shot the second roommate as he was trying to run away. The shooter then went to the back of the house and took his own life, Prince George's County police spokeswoman Cpl. Maria McKinney said.

The first roommate who was shot was pronounced dead at a hospital, the other victim suffered non-life threatening injuries, McKinney said.

Police have recovered the weapon used in the incident, and they said that they are not looking for any other suspects.

University of Maryland police spokesman Maj. Marc Limansky said that the shooter was a 24-year-old engineering graduate student. He was not sure if the victims were undergraduate or graduate students at the school.
