A 94-year-old man's death has been ruled a homicide -- the first one to have occurred in Alexandria since 2011, police said Thursday.

About 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, Elmer Roehrs was found by his stepson at their home in the 2700 block of Holly Street, which is on the outskirts of the Del Ray neighborhood. Roehrs had suffered trauma to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was one homicide in Alexandria in 2011, and there hadn't been any in the city since.

Roehrs' home had been burglarized on Nov. 27, 2012. Police said that the suspect in that incident, 45-year-old Marie Maybell Johnson, was arrested early Thursday morning after a traffic stop in the 1400 block of Duke Street, about 2 1/2 miles from the home.

Johnson, of no fixed address, has been charged with burglary and grand larceny in connection with the November incident, and she is being held without bond. She has not been charged in connection with Roehrs' death, police said.
