Malcolm X assassinated by Black Muslims
On this day, Feb. 21, in 1965, the former Nation of Islam leader Malcolm X was assassinated by rival Black Muslims at a rally of his followers in New York City.

The killing came less than a year after Malcolm X had broken from the Nation of Islam and converted to traditional Islam.

In that time, he made a Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, where he began to question his beliefs after seeing Muslims of all races coming together in peace. He grew to believe that racism, not the white race, was the greatest foe of the African-American.

He was about to address about 400 followers when members of the Nation of Islam rushed forward and shot him in the chest with a sawed-off shotgun and handguns. - Scott McCabe
