As CNN’s Piers Morgan began his interview with former president Jimmy Carter, he remarked that he was remarkably healthy looking.

“You look, actually in terrific nick,” Morgan said to Carter cheekily. “Maybe you should be Pope.”

When asked about his opinion on Pope Benedict XVI’s plans to resign, Carter replied that he was “surprised” but as he did not know the details on the pontiff’s health, he would withhold judgement.

“If an American President retired on the grounds of exhaustion, there would be ridicule wouldn’t there?” asked Morgan.

Carter replied that it ultimately was up to the pope to make the decision based on his health conditions.
