Prince George's man killed in suspected gang-related shooting

A 20-year-old man was shot and killed in College Park in an incident that appears to be gang-related, police said.

About 4 a.m. Sunday, officers went to the 9100 block of Baltimore Avenue and found David Esequel Avelar, of Hillcrest Heights, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation by Prince George's County police found that Avelar had been attending a party at a hotel. He was shot during a fight in a parking lot that occurred between Avelar's group and a second group attending a different party at the hotel. Police are working to identify those involved.

Boy, 12, injured in Maryland collision

A 12-year-old boy was seriously injured when his dirt bike collided with a 1992 Ford van in Anne Arundel County, police said.

The incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday on the 500 Block of Friendship Road, near Herring Bay.

An investigation found that the van was passing the dirt bike in the westbound lane of Friendship Road when the bike abruptly turned into the van's path without any notice. The van's driver, a 49-year-old man, tried to avoid hitting the bike but was unable to do so.

After the van struck the bike and the boy operating it, the van dragged the bike for a short distance because the bike had gotten lodged underneath it. The boy was separated from his vehicle and came to a rest in the roadway, Anne Arundel County police said.

The boy sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and the van's driver was uninjured.

Police believe that the crash was caused by an error on the boy's part. He was illegally operating the dirt bike in the roadway.
