President Obama got his sci-fi movies muddled during a press briefing today, but the White House meme-makers are determined not to waste a mistake.

Obama conflated tropes from Star Trek and Star Wars during his press briefing. “And I know that this has been some of the conventional wisdom that’s been floating around Washington that somehow, even though most people agree that I’m being reasonable, that most people agree I’m presenting a fair deal, the fact that they don’t take it means that I should somehow do a Jedi mind-meld with these folks and convince them to do what’s right,” he told reporters. “Well, they’re elected.  We have a constitutional system of government.  The Speaker of the House and the leader of the Senate and all those folks have responsibilities.”

A mind meld is a power attributed to Vulcans in the Star Trek series, while the Jedis of Star Wars, of course, can do mind tricks.

After the briefing, the White House Twitter feed published a photo of Obama. “These aren’t the cuts you are looking for,” the caption reads in another Star Wars-Star Trek merger. “To deny the facts would be illogical.”

The URL “whitehouse.gov/jedimindmeld” also redirects viewers to the White House page about sequestration.
