An increase in local real estate taxes isn't the only thing driving up the cost of living in Northern Virginians this year.
The state and federal government are hiking taxes, too.
To fund road construction and other transportation projects, Northern Virginia residents will be paying higher sales, motor vehicle and hotel taxes. Residents who own a hybrid vehicle will also have to fork over a $100 annual road-use fee.
The federal government is also adding to the burden.
Congress and the White House agreed to let the payroll tax rise by 2 percent this year, taking another chunk out of the paychecks of virtually every working American. Those earning $400,000 or more a year will also be paying higher income taxes.
