Democrats on the House Education and Workforce Committee walked out this morning during a mark-up of legislation to reauthorize the Workforce Investment Act, a major job training bill. The Republican-written legislation  scraps 35 programs it calls “duplicative and ineffective.” It also  employment and training programs. It also strengthens the role of employers in in administering the programs “by repealing 19 federal mandates governing workforce investment board representation.”

The committee’s Democrats fumed that they had not had a chance to amend the legislation. In a joint statement, they said:

Democrats can only come to the conclusion that this bill is being advanced for political reasons, not to make the workforce investment system work better. It would have been a dereliction of duty to continue to participate.
