4 shot in D.C. in 12-hour span

Four people were shot in the District in a 12-hour span, and police said the culprits in the incidents intended to rob the victims.

Shortly after midnight on Tuesday, two men were shot outside a Z-Mart store on the 1800 block of Benning Road NE by a man who had held up one of the victims.

Then about 1 p.m. on the 3500 block of 18th St. SE, two people waiting for an ice cream truck were approached by two men, one of whom was armed and demanded shoes. One of the victims was then shot in the lower back and was taken to a hospital, police spokeswoman Officer Tisha Gant said.

A few hours later, a man was shot after he slapped a handgun out of the hand of a man who was trying to rob him on the 4400 block of F St. SE, police said. Gant could not say whether the incidents were related.

Arrest in killing near Nationals Park

A Temple Hills teenager has been was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting near Nationals Park, police said.

Donte Graves, 18, was arrested Tuesday morning on charges of second-degree murder while armed in the death of 22-year-old Tyrone Joyner, according to D.C. police.

Joyner, of Southwest D.C., was found with a gunshot wound on the 1400 block of Canal Street SW on the evening of Feb. 24. He later died at a hospital.

Police warn of phone scam

Dozens of seniors have been victimized by telephone scammers in recent weeks, Fairfax County police said.

In the latest scam, victims are receiving calls from someone pretending to be from a utility company, delivery service or sweepstakes.

Residents are told their service will be discontinued unless they pay by phone immediately.
