The Prince George's County Council is scheduled to vote tomorrow on County Executive Rushern Baker's proposal to offer retirement incentives for county employees.

The proposal, which was introduced last week along with a $3.2 billion budget, would offer qualified employees $1,000 for every year they have worked in the county if they retire between May 1 and July 1.

Many of those positions wouldn't be filled to help erase a $152 million budget gap - Baker's budget chief, Thomas Himler, said the goal is to lose 200 positions, which would save the county $19 million.

While many county employees are getting a raise to the tune of about $18 million total - the county is still negotiating contracts - the budget also includes five furlough days.
