White House Press Secretary Jay Carney mocked the idea that partisan ambitions motivated the decision to use the Obamacare application to register new voters.
“The linkage of checking off whether you want to register to vote goes back to a 1993 law regarding Medicaid,” Carney said, after asking that Republicans concerned that the application might function as a Democratic voter registration tool plan to disown recipients of Medicaid. “As a separate measure, I’m not sure that it’s such a terrible thing that people might want to register to vote.”
The Washington Examiner’s Paul Bedard reported on the Obamacare application yesterday. “Boustany, a Louisiana Republican, said the application raises two alarming issues: What does HHS plan to do with all the information it collects on each applicant and will pro-Obama groups like AARP and Families USA that might be tapped as “navigators” to sign people up to Obamacare, steer them to register as Democrats,” Bedard wrote. “Others have indicated that groups like Planned Parenthood and ACORN could also act as a navigator.”
