Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run on Beltway

A 53-year-old man was killed by a hit-and-run driver while walking on the Capital Beltway early Wednesday.

Police have identified the pedestrian as Douglas Edward Diggs, of Capitol Heights.

Diggs apparently was walking in the roadway on the Beltway's Outer Loop. He was fatally struck near the Landover Road exit in Capitol Heights. A Prince George's County police officer discovered the body about 3:20 a.m.

Police say they have no leads on the vehicle that struck Diggs.

Prison inmate killed

A male prison inmate has died at the Maryland Correctional Institution-Hagerstown, and police suspect he was murdered.

State police said a correctional officer found Deavel M. Johnson, 22, bleeding from at least one serious wound on his upper body in the dormitory area of the prison on Tuesday night. Johnson had been serving a sentence for first-degree burglary since 2011.

Johnson received medical care at the prison and then was pronounced dead at the Meritus Medical Center shortly after 11:30 p.m.

The Maryland State Police are investigating the incident and await the medical examiner's ruling after an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Johnson's death.
