A 58-year-old Potomac man was sentenced for obstructing background investigations for a high-level security clearance.

From 2003 to 2011, Gurpreet Singh Kohli ran a business that sold U.S. defense electronics while he also held a full-time position with a weapons manufacturer based in Maryland, which required a security clearance.

Prosecutors said he did not reveal his activities with his own business to his employer or to his clients.

In 2010, agents from the FBI interviewed Kohli for his son's applications for employment with the FBI. Kohli minimized his son's role with his company, his own contacts with foreign customers, and falsely said his wife ran his company.

He also lied about the purpose of his travels overseas.

Kohli was sentenced to six months home detention with electronic monitoring and three years probation.
