Man dies in Silver Spring apartment fire

A 63-year-old man was killed and three other people, including a 6-year-old child, were injured after a fire broke out in a Silver Spring apartment building just after sunrise Tuesday morning.

Officials said the fire appeared to have started in the sixth floor of the Montgomery Towers Apartments at 415 Silver Spring Ave.

Firefighters rescued several people who were trapped on the balconies on the top floor.

Police have identified the man who died in the blaze as Edward Mager, of Silver Spring.

Woman ID'd in fatal Cheverly blaze

A woman who was killed in a Cheverly house fire on Sunday has been identified as 59-year-old Stephanie Kay Syslo.

Prince George's County fire officials responded to the fire at a two-story home on the 2400 block of 59th Place about 8 a.m. Sunday, and found Syslo on the second floor.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental.

5 people killed in Virginia crash

Five people died when a pickup truck traveling the wrong way on Interstate 85 crashed into a car Tuesday morning in Brunswick County, Va., according to state police.

Officials said the truck was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 at about 6 a.m. when it hit the car. Police were not able to immediately identify the driver of the truck or any of the four people in the car.
