On this day, April 4, in 1958, Hollywood star Lana Turner and her boyfriend engaged in a struggle that ended in his death.
Turner had a thing for bad boys, and Los Angeles hoodlum Johnny Stompanato -- the body guard for gangster Mickey Cohen -- fit the bill.
But when Turner tried to break off the relationship, Stompanato became violent. The jealous Stompanato even appeared at a filming in London with a gun. Co-star Sean Connery punched him in the jaw and disarmed him.
Stompanato was fatally stabbed during an argument at Turner's Beverly Hills home. Fearing for her mother's life, Turner's daughter Cheryl Crane, 14, grabbed a knife and stabbed Stompanato.
Turner's testimony at a hearing has been called the performance of her life.
A judge ruled the killing justifiable.
