A former volunteer firefighter and his girlfriend were charged in a rash of fires set on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

Virginia State Police say Charles R. Smith III, 38, and Tonya Bundick, 40, both of Parksley, Va., set most of the nearly 80 fires that authorities have been investigating since November.

The couple was caught after by a state trooper Monday night shortly after a minivan matching the description of their vehicle was seen leaving the fire of a vacant house in Melfa.

Law enforcement officials have been investigating 77 arson fires at abandoned or vacant structures throughout Accomack County over the past five months.
