EMERGING ACTS

D.C. latest pop band, GEMS, may have only formed last year, but that hasn't stopped the duo from making an early name for themselves as one of the city's best emerging acts. GEMS has been receiving all kinds of attention from Pitchfork and Yours Truly, all because of the pair's mesmerizing, lo-fi dream pop.

They've taken the show on the road but are finally coming back to their hometown for a performance at the Gibson Guitar's DC Showroom (709 G St. NW #400). The concert is presented by All Things Go, a music, news and culture website based in the city. This is the website's eighth installment in their New Noise music series. Opening the show will be D.C. electro-pop upstarts PLOY.

BE BALLADS

Platinum-selling Charleston-native Edwin McCain started off just like any struggling singer trying to make it -- on the road with plenty of time to kill. Accompanied by his longtime friends and bandmates, McCain traveled around the country serenading audiences with his Southern charm and sentimental ballads. He eventually became known as "the great American romantic" by the New York Times and has played with famed bands such as the Dixie Chicks, Hootie and the Blowfish and Art Garfunkel. He's released several top-selling albums throughout his career, and his most popular song, "I'll Be," landed on VH1's "100 Greatest Songs of the '90s."

He'll be performing at the Barns at Wolf Trap (1635 Trap Road, Vienna) alongside singer Erick Baker. Tickets are $30 at wolftrap.org. The show starts at 8 p.m.

Vinoteca is celebrating the spring season by opening up its beautiful courtyard -- complete with bocce court -- and introducing a sparkling springtime special that has us all excited. The wine-centric bistro's very own executive chef, Lonnie Zoeller, has created a dynamite Hot Dog and Bubbly special for just $12 featuring handmade hot dogs and buns ranging from a classic frankfurter and D.C.-style half-smoke sausage to a spiced-up veggie dog -- all paired with a glass of bubbly. Zoeller's also whipped up juicy, grilled-to-order burgers and other new snacks such as the pickled veggies and grilled bread and pimento cheese plate. Mixologist Horus Alvarez has also created fresh new libations such as the U Street Mule and Rum Runner Punch with fresh pineapple.
