Longtime CNN international correspondent Christiane Amanpour and lifelong consumer advocate Ralph Nader are being honored Tuesday night at the Arab American Institute Foundation's annual Kahlil Gibran "Spirit of Humanity" Awards Gala.

The host of "Amanpour" on CNN International is receiving the group's first-ever Anthony Shadid Award for Excellence in Journalism. It is named for the former New York Times reporter who won the Pulitzer Prize for foreign reporting twice and who died in February 2012 from an asthma attack while attempting to leave Syria.

"I'm deeply honored to receive this inaugural award," said Amanpour before the event. "I was a great admirer of my dear colleague Anthony Shadid. He had a unique way of telling the human side of the story, even under the most extreme circumstances."

Nader is being honored for his public service at the gala taking place at Washington's JW Marriott hotel. Two others are also receiving awards: Top 40 DJ Casey Kasem and the Children's Defense Fund.
