National Geographic Society and D.C. police have set up a live webcam of two bald eagles watching over recently hatched chicks in a tree high above the police academy in Southeast Washington.

The Eagle Cam Live-Stream was Police Chief Cathy Lanier's idea, according to National Geographic officials. "[T]he symbol of our country's strength and freedom can remind us all what America stands for," Lanier wrote in an email to residents Wednesday.

The nest, about 5 feet wide and made mostly of sticks, sits about 80 feet up in a tree. John Mein of the Metropolitan Police Department installed the camera in a nearby tree. -- Scott McCabe
