During an event at Georgetown University, former President Clinton explained that although he was successful in passing an assault weapons ban, he paid for it in the 1994 congressional elections.

“The people who were against it said, ‘I’m going to kill you. I wouldn’t vote for you if you were the last candidate on Earth.’ ” Clinton said.

Clinton reminded the audience that any politician should measure the level of intensity of the opposition when taking up controversial legislation.

He added that the difference of American opinions on gun control was usually between urban and rural citizens.

“If you live in a city and you think you need protection of your home, you’re way better off with a shotgun than an assault weapon,” Clinton added. “Trust me. It’s not even close.”
