Man accused of choking ex, stealing Chihuahua

A Hyattsville man was arrested after police said he choked his ex-girlfriend and stole her Chihuahua.

Arlington County police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said Jonathan Jimenez, 24, approached the woman shortly after midnight Tuesday as she was walking the dog on the 2400 block of 11th Street N. in Arlington.

Jimenez and the woman, who broke up several months earlier, got into an argument, and Jimenez put his hands around the woman's neck, police said. She was able to break free, and Jimenez fled in a vehicle with the dog.

As police arrived on the scene, Jimenez called the woman, who asked him to come back.

Police were there to arrest Jimenez when he returned, and the dog was recovered unharmed. He was charged with strangulation, attempted malicious wounding, grand larceny and domestic assault.

Driver admits to killing churchgoer

An Annapolis man has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in an accident that killed a 71-year-old D.C. woman as she was leaving church.

Police said Joel Bromwell was behind the wheel of an SUV on the night of March 21, when it struck Ruby Whitfield on the 1100 block of Florida Avenue NE.

Whitfield was dragged 86 feet before her body became dislodged from the 2010 Mercury Mountaineer. Bromwell kept driving and was arrested two blocks away, police said.

Whitfield was leaving the New Samaritan Baptist Church. Police said Bromwell, 32, had been drinking at a D.C. nightclub.
