Ahead of Mother’s Day, Obama to make health care appeal to women

President Obama will attempt to sell his health care reforms to women on Friday, using an event at the White House ahead of the Mother’s Day holiday to win over a demographic critical to the success — or failure — of his signature legislative achievement.

“Mothers are the number one validator for the young and uninsured and will be critical in the effort to encourage their kids to enroll for insurance in the fall,” a White House official said, previewing Obama’s pitch. ” The audience for the event is comprised of representatives from women’s organizations that will help amplify the benefits of the [Affordable Care Act] for women and help us communicate with millions of women the benefits that are now available to them and their families.”

From the East Room of the White House, the president will argue that Obamacare stopped insurance companies from denying insurance coverage for children, increased access to mammograms and birth control and allowed more kids to stay on their parents’ plans.

However, the public has increasingly soured on Obamacare. And Democrats have expressed growing reservations about the most comprehensive overhaul to the health care system since Medicare was created in 1965.

A recent survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that many Americans still don’t understand what the law actually does. The president has long struggled to convince independent and Republican-leaning voters that his health care blueprint would lower premiums and expand insurance coverage.

If Obama doesn’t improve the public perception of his reforms, they could also weigh down Democrats in the 2014 mid-term elections. The president looked to alleviate those concerns last week at a press conference marking the 100th day of his second term.

“I think that any time you’re implementing something big, there’s going to be people who are nervous and anxious about is it going to get done, until it’s actually done,” he said. “And for the 85 to 90 percent of Americans who already have health insurance, they’re already experiencing most of the benefits of the Affordable Care Act even if they don’t know it.”
