The Pew Hispanic Center reports that more Hispanics are going to college these days — indeed, that a larger percentage of Hispanics than of non-Hispanic whites are enrolling in college.

Optimistic interpretation: Hispanics are placing a higher value on education. A possibly offsetting factor: Hispanics are more likely than whites to be enrolling in community colleges.

This may represent a shrewd decision to minimize higher education costs. But it may also reflect something I have suspected for years: that Hispanics are learning in community college what they should have been taught in high school.

Two of the highest enrollment community colleges in the country, in Los Angeles and Miami, have predominantly Hispanic student bodies.
