A 77-year-old Silver Spring woman was fatally struck by a vehicle when she was sitting on a bench at a Wheaton bus shelter, police said.

About 4:30 p.m. Thursday, a 1996 Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound on Veirs Mill Road and then made a U-turn onto the road's westbound lanes at the intersection with Ferrara Avenue. Montgomery County police said the vehicle may have struck a curb while making the U-Turn.

The Ford crossed the westbound lanes of Veirs Mill Road, went over the center median and crossed the eastbound lanes. It drove over a curb and crashed through the bus-stop shelter, striking Maria Lusminia Colindres, police said. Colindres was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Police are investigating the crash.
