A Virginia doctor who allegedly over-prescribed pain medication has been indicted on 95 counts, including one of manslaughter, authorities said.
Nibedita Mohanty, 54, of Stafford, was indicted on one count of involuntary manslaughter, 72 counts of felony narcotics distribution and 22 counts of felony obtaining money by false pretenses involving insurance fraud, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.
Detectives launched an investigation into Mohanty after they learned that she was dispensing substantial quantities of prescription pain medications without appropriate oversight. A number of the doctor's patients personally abused the narcotics or sold them to others, authorities said.
The manslaughter charge stems from an overdose death that was directly related to Mohanty overprescribing narcotics, authorities said.
