Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., slammed the Justice Department for subpoenaing two months of Associated Press phone records, citing his support for freedom of the press.

“I have trouble defending what the Justice Department did,” Reid told reporters in the Capitol. Reminded about the national security justification offered by Attorney General Eric Holder, he replied that “this isn’t fair just to start subpoenaing records.”

Speaking to reporters earlier Tuesday, Holder couldn’t explain why the Justice Department made no effort to get the AP to turn over phone records voluntarily.

“The deputy attorney general would have ultimately been the one who authorized the subpoena that was sent to the AP,” Holder said during a press conference today.
