An Alexandria grand jury has indicted a man in the shooting of a police officer and a woman in the slaying of a 94-year-old man, officials said.
Kashif Bashir, 27, was indicted for shooting Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy during a Feb. 27 traffic stop. Bashir is charged with attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated malicious wounding, and two counts of using a firearm during a felony, according to the Alexandria Police Department.
Laboy was shot in the head during the incident and his since had multiple surgeries. A doctor said Officer Laboy was lucky to have survived the shooting.
Additionally, Marie M. Johnson, 45, has been indicted in the February homicide of 94-year-old Elmer Roehrs. Johnson is charged with murder, attempted arson and destruction of property, officials said.
Roehrs was found dead in his Del Ray area home on Feb. 13, suffering from trauma to the upper body. His death was Alexandria's first homicide since 2011, police said.
Johnson was initially arrested hours after Roehrs' body was found for a burglary that had occurred at the victim's home in November, police said.
