A woman who was wielding a knife and scissors at a Sterling Costco was fatally shot by a Loudoun County sheriff's deputy, officials said.

About 3 p.m. Wednesday, authorities were called to the Costco in the 21300 block of Price Cascades Plaza for a report of a disorderly person. Mhai Scott, 38, of Sterling, had reportedly been threatening employees while holding the knife and scissors, Loudoun County sheriff's office officials said.

Two deputies at the scene commanded Scott to drop the weapons, but she advanced on them. One of the deputies deployed a stun gun, but it was ineffective. The other deputy then fired multiple shots, officials aid.

Scott was pronounced dead at the scene. A deputy was taken to a hospital after the incident and has since been released.

According to media reports, the deputy may have been injured by a bullet that ricocheted. Scott worked for Club Demonstration Services, which provides services to Costco clubs.
