An 81-year-old woman was fatally struck by a vehicle in the parking lot for a Giant Food store in Potomac, police said.

The incident took place shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of the supermarket at 7919 Tuckerman Lane. The Giant is located in the Cabin John Shopping Center.

At the end of a parking aisle near the Giant, the driver of a 2009 Acura MDX made a left turn, and the Acura struck Shirley Stearman, 81, of Potomac. Stearman had just parked her car and was walking toward the store when she was hit, Montgomery County police said.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel were already at the shopping center on an unrelated call, so they were able to assist Stearman immediately. But Spearman died from her injuries after she was taken to a hospital, police said.

The circumstances of the crash are still being investigated Monday.

CORRECTION: This story has been updated to reflect that authorities had previously misspelled Stearman's last name.
