A Tappahannock man was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment Monday for possession of illegally-harvested striped bass.

William W. Lowery IV, 44, a Virginia charter fishing captain, admitted that he took a client to fish for striped bass to an area about seven to 10 miles off shore, knowing that it was illegal to fish for striped bass there.

When law enforcement officers approached his boat, the Anna Lynn, Lowery attempted to flee. During the pursuit, a trash barrel containing 13 striped bass was thrown overboard from the Anna Lynn.

After serving his sentence, Lowery will be placed on supervised release for one year, during which he will also be prevented from engaging in the charter fishing industry.
