While in India, Secretary of State John Kerry told CNN foreign affairs reporter Elise Labott that whistleblower Edward Snowden has put the United States in jeopardy. "What I see is an individual who threatened his country," Kerry responded to a question about the free press being threatened, "and put Americans at risk through the acts that he took. People may die as a consequence of what this man did. It is possible the United States will be attacked because terrorists may now know how to protect themselves in some way or another that they didn't know before."
Labott had lamented how the Obama administration has taken an unprecedented role in prosecuting whistleblowers and asked if Kerry would put Snowden in the same category as notorious spies like Aldrich Ames, who gave the Soviet Union sensitive data during the Cold War. It is clear from Kerry's statement that the Obama administration does believe that Snowden is in the same category as Ames.
