Secretary of State John Kerry appeared on camera Wednesday, to address the crisis in Egypt, calling for Egyptians to “calm down and take a step back” and respect the basic rights of the protestors on the ground.

“Violence is simply not a solution in Egypt or anywhere else,” Kerry insisted. “Violence will not create a road map for Egypt’s future.”

Kerry also said that Egyptians had to still decide for themselves what their government would look like.

“The promise of the 2011 revolution has never been fully realized and the final outcome of the revolution is not yet decided,” he added. “It will be shaped in the hours ahead in the days ahead, and it will be shaped by the decisions which all of Egypt’s political leaders make now and in these days ahead.”
