Republican Reps. Tom Cotton and Mike Pompeo are calling on their GOP peers to support President Obama's plan to strike militarily against Syria.

"This is the most consequential vote any Congress can take," Pompeo and Cotton, both Army veterans, wrote in an op-ed published late Tuesday by the Washington Post. "We support a well-crafted use-of-force resolution against Syria and urge the president to take decisive, effective military action."

The vocal support of Cotton, of Arkansas, and Pompeo, of Kansas, for the president comes as the administration on Tuesday was building its case for a military strike against Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime in retaliation for its use of chemical weapons to kill hundreds of its own citizens.

Cotton, in particular, is taking a political risk with his calls for support of a Democratic president. Cotton is challenging Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., in the 2014 mid-term elections and is staking much of his campaign on criticizing Pryor's support for Obama's policies.

But Cotton has also branded himself as a hawk within the Republican Party and has emphasized his military service as a qualification to serve in the Senate.

Pryor has not yet announced how he will vote on the resolution authorizing force against Syria, but he has expressed caution and asked that the president more clearly outline his objectives.
