World War II veterans visiting their memorial in Washington, D.C., knocked down the barriers placed around the World War II memorial as a congressman distracted law enforcement.

"Tons of applause as the WWII vets from Miss. storm their memorial," Stars and Stripes reporter Leo Shane tweeted. "Park police on the way," he observed, before adding that there is "no sign of folks leaving. The vets have control of the memorial."

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, proved helpful. "Credit where due -- I watched Rep Steve King distract a park police officer while vets and staffers knocked down the fences here," Shane reported, noting minutes later that park police were making "no attempt to stop any WWII visitors right now. Maybe after the congressmen leave[.]"
