Sen. John Cornyn isn't taking any chances with his re-election.

After ending July with roughly $6 million left in his campaign coffers, Cornyn, R-Texas, is putting several hundred thousand dollars behind his first television spot of the election, a Cornyn campaign aide confirmed.

The ad, which touts Cornyn's votes against Obamacare and his "Texas common sense," will air throughout Texas starting Monday.

"Our John Cornyn," a narrator says in the ad. "Conservative like you, like Texas."

The greatest re-election threat Cornyn would likely face would come from his right flank. During the government showdown, Cornyn remained relatively quiet about an effort to defund Obamacare by threatening a shutdown, which was led by his Texas colleague, Sen. Ted Cruz. Still, the Senate Conservatives Fund, last month called Cornyn a "turncoat," and Tea Party groups have threatened to challenge him in next year's Republican primary.

Cornyn's first ad of the mid-term election cycle, which defends his conservative credentials, shows he is wary of threats from the right — and ready to spend considerable money defending himself against them.
