President Obama will pull Vice President Joe Biden closer after he received tough criticism from former Defense Secretary Robert Gates in his upcoming memoir.

According to the White House schedule for Wednesday, Obama will attend five events with Biden at his side, including a meeting with intelligence leaders and a meeting with Secretary of State John Kerry.

The White House is also allowing press access to Obama's lunch with Biden, an unusual privilege for reporters.

"Same day the Gates book is out with scathing hits on Biden, White House decides to allow some press coverage of tomorrow's weekly Obama-Biden lunch," mused MSNBC White House Correspondent Chuck Todd on Twitter late Tuesday. "Very rare."

The White House also issued a statement Tuesday in reaction to the book, calling Biden "one of the leading statesmen of his time."
