Former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs admitted Sunday that Democrats were in obvious danger of losing the Senate in 2014.

When asked by NBC's David Gregory if Democrats could lose the senate, the former press secretary for President Obama replied, "absolutely" and "definitely."

"Honesty — you can only go so far in Washington when you are employed," Gibbs grinned. "As a consultant I can say all these things now."

Gibbs pointed out that Democrats would struggle in places where Obama was extremely unpopular including states like Louisiana, North Carolina, and Montana.

Gibbs suggested that Obama would be finished politically if that happened.

"If you lose the Senate, turn out the lights; the party is over," Gibbs said.
