Should women take matters into their own hands and learn self-defense in order to potentially avoid rape? Apparently not, according to the feminist outrage launched against the new Miss USA for suggesting such.

Nia Sanchez, the contestant from Nevada, was asked what colleges can do to combat sexual assaults on campus.

“I think more awareness is very important so women can learn how to protect themselves,” Sanchez said. “Myself as a fourth-degree black belt, I learned from a young age that you need to be confident and be able to defend yourself and I think that’s something we should start to really implement for a lot of women.”

How. Dare. She.

Women defending themselves? What an absurd notion! The real answer to solving campus sexual assaults is to teach men not to rape, according to those outraged by Sanchez’s response.

The tweeter above then walked back her statement, saying she did believe women should learn to defend themselves, but claimed that Sanchez, in her response, labeled women as the problem.

Where in Sanchez’s response did she say women were getting themselves raped? All she did was suggest women learn self-defense. That’s not even a new or radical concept – self-defense courses are already offered on college campuses. Sanchez didn’t break any new ground.

The problem Sanchez ran into is the PC police – the “women are victims, men are evil” brigade. Sanchez should have just said that men accused of sexual assault – regardless of any sort of investigation or hearing – should be expelled and castrated. That’s probably the only response that would have appeased the outrage machine.

And really, isn’t feminism supposed to be about empowering women? When did it become about keeping women victims?

The judges seemed pleased with Sanchez's response, since she went on to be crowned Miss USA.
